What does Family-Centered-Care mean to you?

Family-Centered-Care focuses on recognizing that each child and each family is unique. When we take note of their various backgrounds, personalities, and experiences, we are better able to meet their specific needs and provide the best care possible, personalized to the child/family.  Also, by recognizing the individuality of each situation, child life specialists can tailor their communication and explanations to the development and abilities of the child. Perhaps the most important factor of Family-Centered-Care, though, is empowering families to advocate for themselves. I will always serve as an advocate for my patients, but I also want them to feel strong enough to communicate for themselves. When medical staff and families are able to partner together for the common good of the child, the result is the highest quality of care.
