Goal #1: To gain understanding of the history and role of Child Life, especially the specific Child Life program at the hospital.

 

Goal #2: To refine ability to communicate and advocate for Child Life practice to children, families, healthcare professionals, and others.

 

Goal #3: To strengthen knowledge of developmental theory by applying it into all assessments, interventions, and documentation.

 

Goal #4: To learn to assess a patient’s situation and needs, develop and implement a plan, and thoroughly document the assessment, interventions, and results.

 

Goal #5: To collaborate with the multidisciplinary healthcare team by learning to present Child Life assessments and evidence-based plans, as well as how to effectively advocate for the patient, family, and Child Life presence.

 

Goal #6: To empower children and families to advocate for themselves and cope in a healthy fashion, especially during end-of-life care.

 

Goal #7: To increase knowledge of and ability to explain medical procedures and terminology at a developmentally-appropriate level.

 

Goal #8: To meet the psychosocial needs of children and families through education, preparation, and support, often by utilizing developmentally-appropriate play and expressive modalities, such as art, music, drama, and composition.

 

Goal #9: To gain experience in providing family-centered-care with excellence and attention to diversity and cultural sensitivity.

 

Goal #10: To transition from a student to a self-reflective professional that is prepared to sit for the Child Life exam and work as an effective Child Life Specialist.
