How did you first become interested in or aware of child life?

Throughout high school, I was a nanny for a set of twin boys and their older sister. When one of the boys was diagnosed with a brain tumor at age 6, I spent lots of time visiting him in the hospital and was introduced to many child life specialists. It was then that I realized how wonderfully the field of child life synthesized two of my passions: child advocacy and medicine. As a high-school student, I was stuck on deciding between majoring in nursing or counseling. I loved the medical setting, but I also valued forming deeper interpersonal relationships with children. The ease, distraction, and even joy that the child life specialist brought to this little boy's family made me realize just how vital she was to his recovery. The doctors and nurses worked tirelessly to save his life, but the child life specialist worked tirelessly to make his and his families' lives worth living during the ordeal. I've witnessed the impact that a child life specialist can have on a family from the beginning of a cancer diagnosis all the way until remission, and it would be an honor to walk through medical struggles with children and their families.
