How does a child life specialist contribute to the health care experience of a child and his/her family?

Child life specialists, trained in family systems and child development, are not only complementary, but necessary to helping manage stressful medical situations and decrease lasting trauma. They provide emotional support for children by preparing them for procedures, supporting them during procedures, and providing education about diagnoses; most often this support is accomplished through the child's natural language, play. Families and siblings often experience great amounts of stress when a child is undergoing medical treatment, causing the child to become more stressed and anxious. Consequently, child life specialists make a focused effort to also support the child's family, especially siblings, by explaining what is happening and helping to alleviate any concerns. Family-Centered-Care should be the focus of each healthcare encounter. If a child's condition is terminal, the child life specialist will help everyone work through their grief and even create legacy-building and memory-making activities. Whether their support comes through distraction techniques during a painful procedure, medical therapeutic play, or family memory-making, child life specialists have an immeasurable influence by the emotional support the provide to children and families.
