Child Life Portfolio

What is the child life specialist's role on the multidisciplinary healthcare team?
Each person on a child's healthcare team is there to help the child and his/her family. Child life specialists work alongside the other healthcare professionals to support a child through procedure preparation, procedure support, and even education about a new diagnosis. They help to prevent medical trauma and work with doctors and nurses to make each child's medical experience as least painful as possible. Doctors and nurses call upon child life specialists during procedures to help calm or distract a child so they can better do their work. Child life specialists are also able to share their assessments of a child with doctors, so everyone can come up with the best treatment plan possible. An integral part of every healthcare team, child life specialists are vital to making sure each child and family are supported while in the hospital.
